Beech vs Birch Plywood

Most comparisons of these two panels are written by people who sell neither. We press beech for a living, our customers switched from birch, and the honest answer has numbers in it. Here they are.

The short version: beech is the denser, harder species — 750 vs ~650 kg/m³, with ≥25 N/mm² Brinell surface hardness and 75 N/mm² bending strength. Birch remains a solid panel, but it is supply-restricted in the EU and its remaining import routes carry heavy duties. Anywhere birch worked, beech works at least as well — and today it usually lands cheaper delivered.

Density is the property the others follow from. Those extra ~100 kg per cubic meter are packed fiber — they are why beech holds a screw tighter, why an edge profile stays crisp off the CNC, and why a dropped tool leaves a mark on birch and barely a memory on beech.

The impact test


We run the same demonstration on all three common panel species: a steel ball dropped onto beech, birch and softwood ply. You can watch it happen on the actual 3D panel in our interactive showroom. The pattern repeats every time:

For surfaces that live under impact — worktops, vehicle floors, workshop furniture — that difference is the difference between a panel that ages and a panel that wears out.

The supply reality (this is what actually changed)


For decades birch won on availability: the Baltic mills were close and the price was right. That world is gone. EU measures cut the traditional Russian and Belarusian routes, and what remains carries real costs — an 86.8% duty on Chinese birch plywood and anti-dumping measures on Kazakh and Turkish material.

European beech never had that problem: the forests are here, our mill is in Romania, the paperwork is EU-native (FSC, E1, EUDR-compliant, REX registered). When buyers compare the true delivered cost — panel plus duty plus risk — EU beech now often lands below birch.

Beech comes in the same working formats — 4–60 mm thick, 2500×1500 / 2500×1250 mm and custom sizes — so drawings rarely change. Is beech plywood stronger than birch plywood?

Beech is denser (750 vs ~650 kg/m³) and harder at the surface (≥25 N/mm² Brinell), with 75 N/mm² longitudinal bending strength. In practice: tighter screw-holding, better dent resistance.

Can I replace birch plywood with beech?

In most furniture, joinery, shopfitting and worktop applications, yes — the same thicknesses and formats are available, and anywhere birch worked, beech works at least as well. Free samples let your team verify on their own machines first.

Why is birch plywood hard to source in the EU?
